The city of Naperville offers a wide variety of recreational activities, including sports, art galleries, shopping and community events. Naperville Park District

Residents of Naperville can take advantage of the many activities offered by the Naperville Park District. The Naperville Park District manages over 2,400 acres of open space, including 130 parks and preservation areas, 45 playgrounds, 33 tennis courts and four sports complexes. The Park District also manages two golf courses, and is responsible for the Naperville Riverwalk. Some of the facilities managed by the Naperville Park District include:

  • Centennial Beach, a six-acre swim park with a sandy beach, swim area, volleyball courts, and playground
  • Two parks dedicated to skateboarding and in-line skating, at Frontier Sports Complex and Centennial Park.
  • Naperbrook and Springbrook golf courses
  • Community Garden Plots

The Naperville Park District offers over 900 programs each year. Programs range from athletics, performing arts, personal development, visual arts, environmental education, and day trips. These programs are well attended by the community. In a 2002 survey, 60% of Naperville residents reported participating in a Naperville Park District program at least once each year, which is 32% higher than the national average.

Under construction and set to be completed by 2007, the 23 mile DuPage River Trail will be opened for pedestrians and bicyclists, stretching from the DuPage River Sports Complex to the Naperville Riverwalk. Though not yet completed, the trail is open and fully accessible by bike and pedestrian.

Naperville Riverwalk

The Naperville Riverwalk is a brick path that winds along the DuPage River in downtown Naperville. Built by residents in 1981 to commemorate the city’s 150th birthday, the Naperville Riverwalk features fountains, covered bridges, the Riverwalk amphitheater, gazebos and shaded sitting areas, a cultural center, a large sled hill, the Riverwalk Eatery, a picnic pavilion and paddleboat rides.

Naperville Arts and Culture

The city of Naperville offer a wealth of cultural opportunities, including two museums, renowned community theatre groups, art galleries, a collection of artwork displayed on downtown streets, a municipal band, and a performing arts association. Naperville, IL is also home to the Millennium Carillon. A Carillon is a musical instrument housed in a tower, composed of cup-shaped bells and played from a keyboard using fists and feet. The Millennium Carillon is specially designated as a Grand Carillon, with 72 bells, is one of only four worldwide that span six octaves, and can be played manually or by computer. The tower is located within the Naperville Riverwalk Park complex.
